Hunter Ceiling Fan Wobbles, Makes Humming Noises

If the ceiling fan wobbles or makes noises, the blades may be unbalanced. You’ll need to balance the blades. There are three reasons why a ceiling fan may go out of balance. The three reasons are either a bent blade bracket, a weight discrepancy with the fan, or warped blades.

To start troubleshooting the fan, take a look at it from the side. Do any of the blades appear to be out of line with the rest of the blades? If so, you can try to carefully bend the blade back into place. Use a measuring tape and check if all the blades are the same distance from the ceiling. Also check that they have the same pitch. You can verify this by checking, do any blades look narrower, wider or different that the others. Also look at the blades from below. Check they are spaced evently.

If you are going to bend the blades back, be very careful. The brackets can snap with some force being applied. If you do snap a bracket, you can sometimes purchase a replacement bracket set from the hardware store.  You can also find replacement Hunter fan brackets here.

If the blades appear to be in line properly, there could be a weight issue among the blades. Take a quarter, and tape it to the top of each of the blades. Do this one blade at a time. Observe and see if the balance gets better, with each blade.

Hunter Ceiling Fan Blade Balancing Kits

If you have not been successful with balancing using a quarter, or other small weights like two dimes, nickels, etc. you can try using a blade balancing kit. These kits come with a number of weights, instructions, and different materials. A blade balancing kit is very useful if you feel that you may be repairing ceiling fans often. For instance, if you are a repairman or handyman and you often visit homes where it would be beneficial to have a blade balancing kit with you. These kits are very inexpensive – often less than $20. As such, it’s pretty easy and convenient to purchase one and use it for pretty much any time you need it.

How to Change a Hunter Light Globe

If you have recently broken a light globe, then you’ll need to replace said light globe. Sometimes light globes can smash or break for the following reasons:

  • Kids were kicking the ball around and it impacted the ceiling fan.
  • Someone got really angry and smashed a door closed, which caused the ceiling fan or globe to fall down from the ceiling.
  • Someone really tall walked into the fan.
  • You were trying to change the bulb and dropped the globe.

First, ensure that you turn off all the power to the fan. You may need to wait a few minutes after the power is off before you try to touch the bulbs. The bulbs may be hot, and it takes them a few minutes to cool down. Check the bulb to see if it’s still hot. You may want to use a tissue to remove it. Try not to touch the halogen globe as oils from your hands and dirt gets onto the globe.

Make sure you don’t use more wattage in the plug than it can allow for. If you’re not sure what wattage is supposed to be used, check the last bulb to determine how many watts it was measured at. If you have no idea, you can check the manual that came with the fan. If that fails, try searching for your Hunter ceiling fan manual online.

How to Balance a Hunter Ceiling Fan

Hunter ceiling fans are known for their quality of construction, and reliability in the industry today. However, occasionally even the best ceiling fan may start showing wobbly blades. This means that you need to balance your fan. If the fan is left to rotate this way, it can cause damage to the fan. Plus it is also annoying. It’s important if you notice your fan starting to wobble, that you repair the issue. This will lead to better air efficiency and the fan will have a longer life span due to it.

1. Check the screws that attach the blades to the blade holders. Make sure the blades are tight in their mountings to prevent wobbling.

2. Check all the fan blades and wipe them all down with a damp rag. Removing dirt helps to balance the fan. Remove all the dust, dirt etc. and check if the fan still wobbles after.

3. Use a measuring tape to check the length from the tip of each fan blade, to the ceiling. All the blades should have the same measurement from the tip of the blade to the ceiling. If any are under or over the measurement from the others, then your blades might be bent slightly up or down at the blade holder. If the fan is still wobbling at this point, you will need to purchase a balancing kit.

4. Bring your fan balancing kit home and open it up. There should be a plastic clip-on weight and several metal weights which are stick-on. Find the middle point of the blade. Measure the blade, divide the span/length by 2. This is the middle. At the middle point, attach the clip-on weight. Turn the fan on. If the wobble gets worse, go to the next blade until the wobble stops. Once the wobble stops or becomes less you have found the blade that is unbalanced.

5. Use the clip-on weight to go up and down the unbalanced blade. When the wobble stops, you have found the source of the problem. Remove the plastic weight and attach a metal stick-on weight. The problem is resolved.Keep the weights somewhere safe in case another blade becomes unbalanced someday. Older fans have more chance of become unbalanced. If your blades are becoming unbalanced regularly, check your installation and ensure it is correct.
