My ceiling fan is not that old, but the pull chain for the fan has broken. I always use the pullchain to turn the fan on, and I have no other method to turn on the fan. How do I fix this problem? My fan does not have a remote.
Great question Dan, let’s answer that for you. If your ceiling fan uses a pullchain and has no other option to turn it on, the only way you’ll be able to use that fan again is to replace the pullchain. You can visit almost any electrical parts store to get a replacement pullchain. This would be like a commercial parts store, you’ll have to see what exists locally for you as there are some that are chain stores and then some are just small businesses that sell a variety of items. The ball chain switch required is common to many electrical parts store.
When replacing the switch, map out the wires ahead of time or just replace one wire at a time. This way it’s easy to keep track of which wire connects to where.
Ultimately, all you need is something that will be able to replicate the pulling motion used before, and connected to the right wires (existing) in order to make a connection.
How to replace a ceiling fan pullchain
The above is a step by step, but it is brief and as the old saying goes – a picture is worth a million words. Therefore, please find below a video which shows how to replace the pullchain on your Hunter ceiling fan. In the video, the gentleman is working on another brand of fan, but all of the same step by step applies on how to replace the pullchain without having to take the fan down at all.
Where can I buy a replacement ceiling fan pullchain?
If you’re looking for where to purchase a replacement pullchain, this set has you covered. Each of these chains has a length of 33 cm or 13 inches. Generally, that should be long enough for almost any fan. The funny fan and light bulb design here helps you remember which pull is to turn on the fan, and which one is to turn on the bulb. As long as you wire them correctly, you’ll never have a problem remembering which one to pull to either turn the fan or turn on the light again!
The cost of this set is $17 USD.
